No matter what the specs are for a voiceover audition, you should always treat the script as if it is something coming from your own head.\u00a0 This means that even if the script sounds announcer, even if it starts with the word INTRODUCING, does not mean you should \u201cannounce\u201d it.\u00a0 Writer\u2019s don\u2019t always know what their intentions are, and even if they think they do, sometimes that can change.\u00a0 Unless that script starts with \u201cIn a world\u2026\u201d or \u201cTonight at 7\u2026\u201d you should approach it with your SELF, and not with panache.\u00a0 You can layer that it in the end.\u00a0 Bake your basic cake first.\u00a0 Nothing fancy or showy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is why I like Andy Cooper, voiceover extraordinaire.\u00a0 He\u2019s the guy next door.\u00a0 He, at least at first glance, doesn\u2019t sound like he\u2019s trying to be anything else, and this is how he reels you in.\u00a0 You hear him, and you say subconsciously, I KNOW him.\u00a0 He sounds normal, natural, approachable, and knowledgeable, but not so. . .far away.\u00a0 He\u2019s, in a word, accessible.\u00a0 This is not to say Andy can\u2019t frost a cake.\u00a0 Listen closer, and you hear interesting inflections, points being made succinctly, a wink in the eye.\u00a0 He\u2019s not just speaking nicely, he\u2019s CONNECTING TO YOU.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s try to understand the concept a little more first \u2013 starting with the natural read, and THEN building on to it.\u00a0 Take this sentence:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if the spoon and the lid dripped back into the saucepan?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First you MUST home in on the point your making.\u00a0 Pyrex is the brand, and they\u2019re asking you to imagine the newest product they\u2019ve made, and how effective it is, how it\u2019s solving one of your messiest kitchen problems.\u00a0 What is it doing that\u2019s helpful?\u00a0 Allowing the sauce not to splatter everywhere, but to drip BACK INTO the saucepan.\u00a0 Don\u2019t highlight dripped, don\u2019t highlight saucepan.\u00a0 Your point is to focus on what\u2019s GOOD.\u00a0 That is goes BACK.\u00a0 That it goes INTO (not all over).\u00a0 That is good.\u00a0 Hit those words. \u00a0Play down the others.\u00a0 Now you sound real.\u00a0 Just a real person making a real point.\u00a0 Now ice that cake.\u00a0 Try lower your voice to an intimate \u201cfor your ears only\u201d confidential sound.\u00a0 Your listener will be intrigued, will want to lean in a bit.\u00a0 Try pausing after \u201cwhat if\u201d to create suspense.\u00a0 If you\u2019re not ready for this level of spicing your read, return to that real person.\u00a0 Be yourself, only armed with some interesting information.\u00a0 Now don\u2019t say it.\u00a0 Express it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
