{"id":323,"date":"2014-02-03T22:55:01","date_gmt":"2014-02-03T22:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.voiceovergurus.com\/guru_blog\/?p=323"},"modified":"2014-03-07T20:56:12","modified_gmt":"2014-03-07T20:56:12","slug":"voiceover-authenticity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voiceovergurus.com\/guru_blog\/voiceover-authenticity\/","title":{"rendered":"Voiceover Authenticity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Voiceover acting contains the challenge of finding authenticity where there is seemingly very little.<\/p>\n<p>I pose to you the possibility that the way you approach a voiceover is not that different from the way you approach.\u00a0 You\u2019re projecting!!<\/p>\n<p>I skipped a line to let that sink in.\u00a0 For those of you who skipped an English class or two (I skipped the math class), projecting means not looking at something for exactly what it is but through your filter, through your previous thoughts and feelings and experiences, through your \u201cidea\u201d about that product\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>When we project, a rose isn\u2019t a rose anymore.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s a lily or a daisy.\u00a0 But the writer wants a ROSE.\u00a0 We need to learn how to see what IS and not what we have \u201cmade it out to be.\u201d\u00a0 To some degree, coming from a unique perspective is what can make your read stand out from the pack.\u00a0 What that looks like from a winning place, however, is adding sprinkles onto the top of the sundae \u2013 not changing the sundae into a brownie.\u00a0 The writer wants a sundae.\u00a0 Give the writer a sundae!\u00a0 Just make it the best gosh darn sundae he\u2019s ever had and you both win.\u00a0 How to do this?\u00a0 Go back to every single <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voiceovergurus.com\/guru_blog\/?p=294\">voiceover script analysis article<\/a> in this blog.\u00a0 Another way:\u00a0 Notice where you are projecting in your own life.\u00a0 Distinguish between what\u2019s there and what possible way you wrote your own story around it.\u00a0 I noticed that when my husband interrupted me a few times early on that I thought he didn\u2019t love me or respect me.\u00a0 Well, all that happened was he interrupted me!\u00a0 I turned it into an Oprah Winfrey episode.\u00a0 My husband grew up in large household where there was a lot of distraction and competition.\u00a0 It\u2019s just a rose.\u00a0 I turned it into a cigarette butt.\u00a0 Keep things simple and look very clearly and carefully at things.\u00a0 Keep it to WHAT IS THERE and you\u2019ll be off to a great start.\u00a0 Not only will you find the truth in the voiceover script more easily but you might even stop piling up those cigarette butts in your own life.<\/p>\n<p>To fully maintain authenticity with a script is two-fold.\u00a0 You must find the truth in the writing and not project.\u00a0 You must also listen to your body.\u00a0 When you embrace \u201cwhat\u2019s there\u201d in the script, does it feel fake to you?\u00a0 There\u2019s some inauthenticity there.\u00a0 Put yourself in the shoes of the writer.\u00a0 Grasp the personality that shines through that writer in the script and collaborate with that writer by bringing his truth to life.\u00a0 This is now a human creative collaboration and not just an empty product sell \u2013 which is where I\u2019m guessing some of the inauthenticity might stem from.\u00a0 When you nail this, we can talk about adding the sprinkles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Voiceover acting contains the challenge of finding authenticity where there is seemingly very little.
