YOU MUST KNOW WHAT YOUR INTENTION IS.\u00a0 YOU MUST GET IN THE WRITER\u2019S HEAD VIA VERY FOCUSED SCRIPT ANALYSIS.\u00a0 YOU MUST BE, NOT READ.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been doing this work for the last bunch of blogs, allowing you to really SEE a script for what it is in the hopes it will prevent you from \u201creading.\u201d\u00a0 What I would like to reinforce here is just the intention, rather than the technical aspects of conveying the writer\u2019s truth.\u00a0 Technique(s) will get you far, and they\u2019re appealing because they\u2019re tactile, but they\u2019re like empty calories if the heart isn\u2019t in it too.\u00a0 Intention starts with the \u201cspecs\u201d \u2013 those descriptive words hopefully given by the writer\/producer that explain the type of read it should be.\u00a0 This description might use words like sarcastic, bold, gentle, upbeat, introspective, wry, or playful.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t end there though.\u00a0 There\u2019s only so much the writer can do without being there in person to direct your interpretation.\u00a0 Your job is to those specs to heart and then dig even deeper.\u00a0 Find the words and writing style to support those adjectives that the writer started you out with.\u00a0 Find the truth in the writing that supports it being wry, playful, bold .\u00a0 When you find the truth in the writing you can finally have a support beam for your intention. There are audition opportunities where you may be able to check out scripts and work on your analysis skills at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voices.com\/\">voices.com<\/a>.\u00a0 For now, take these lines from a Chase script:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Chase Sapphire, whenever you call, an expert advisor will pickup, 24\/7.\u00a0 No machines will answer and there are no buttons to push.\u00a0 Ever.\u00a0 We\u2019ll have you at hello.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What you have here is a very clear statement from the writer.\u00a0 He sets up this \u201cvoice\u201d to just TELL IT LIKE IT IS.\u00a0 He adds drama, and confidence to this by separating words and putting them up on a platform.\u00a0 He does this with \u201c24\/7\u201d and also with \u201cever.\u201d\u00a0 When you see words separated by commas or periods that don\u2019t need to be, pay attention.\u00a0 The writer is making a point out of these words.\u00a0 These words, in their isolation, speak more loudly, clearly, boldly, and confidently.\u00a0 Don\u2019t take me literally on the \u201cloudly\u201d.\u00a0 Let that one be metaphorical \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>So there is your intention as laid down for you by the writer:\u00a0 Ultimate confidence.<\/p>\n<p>There are certain techniques that work for confidence, such as leaning more on your downward inflection, but the heart of your intention is most important.\u00a0 If you ultimately can see the big picture here (that the writer wrote this entire script in confident tone), you\u2019re already a winner.\u00a0 You can take that insight and intention all the way . . . to your booking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m your voiceover Chinese water torturer.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a one-track mind.\u00a0 I\u2019m a broken record. . . .
