I had a student a few weeks ago who read a script for me.\u00a0 I asked him, after he finished, to tell me what it\u2019s about.\u00a0 He said he had no idea.\u00a0 I had another student just yesterday who said he knows NOW (after a few intensive sessions together) that he just had a \u201cread\u201d and he just \u201cdid it\u201d on whatever script he was presented with.\u00a0 He never knew what he was reading.\u00a0 He thought the goal was to give this good \u201cread\u201d that he perfected.\u00a0 But we all know, unequivocally, the \u201cread\u201d is 100% dependent on the SCRIPT!\u00a0 Okay, I\u2019ll stop with the broken record\u2026.but let\u2019s say it\u2019s a very thoughtfully executed song on that record, when it plays right.\u00a0 To be fair \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n
We\u2019re looking at a Jaguar script today.\u00a0 Check it out:<\/p>\n
There are Machines that can do things for us.
\nMachines that can make things for us.
\nMachines that can see right through us.
\nAnd Machines that want to be us.\u00a0 Want to replace us.\u00a0 But they are not us.
\nThere is one machine that makes us greater.
\nA machine that\u2019s so instinctive, So seductive, It\u2019s as alive as we are.
\nIt doesn\u2019t click\u2026.Or buzz.
\n(Engine starts) It roars.

So, what are you saying HERE?\u00a0 Your \u201cbest guess\u201d will be as close as possible to what the writer seems to be inferring, so don\u2019t project . . . LOOK, SEE, UNDERSTAND.\u00a0 This writer starts off listing all the ways machines are helpful, efficient, effective, almost insightful.\u00a0 He makes it clear that machines are not BETTER than us humans, but that there is one machine that is not only on par, but that can MAKE US GREATER.\u00a0 He is dancing on a fine line here \u2013 flattering both the audience (aka humans) and also the possibilities of a machine, in this case, the Jaguar, to be precise.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 Now, to stray for a quick moment, I will hear some students get distracted with the \u201ctarget market\u201d during their voiceover script analysis.\u00a0 Not only will they make a (possibly incorrect) assumption (a rich guy, a man going through a middle-aged crisis, etc), but how will that help them even if they are right?\u00a0 How would their tone change?\u00a0 How do you speak to a man in middle-aged crisis?\u00a0 Would it not be more clear and effective to use the words and their intentions as a vessel to represent themselves?\u00a0 What do I mean exactly?\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re talking about the incredible capabilities of machines?\u00a0 How would your tone sound doing THAT?\u00a0 Much easier than how do you sound \u201cspeaking to a man in the midst of a middle-aged crisis\u201d, yes?\u00a0 Your tone would be prideful, deeply confident.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because not only are you speaking about how amazing machines can be, but you go on to discuss the most amazing one of all\u2026..the product you\u2019re speaking on behalf of.\u00a0 That\u2019s all.\u00a0 No more.\u00a0 No less.\u00a0 No projecting.\u00a0 Just understanding the intention of the written words.\u00a0 Now that you\u2019ve made sure to represent the tonal intention properly, make sure to review the rest of your responsibilities for insuring the most authentic read possible in this blog on voiceover technique using your pen<\/a>.\u00a0 Remember those things?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Back to the heart of what matters \u2013 KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.
