Voiceover technique encompasses many things.\u00a0 You must sound likeable, natural, and convincing, among other things.\u00a0 Let\u2019s assume you made it to the pack of people that were allowed to audition for a job (this applies to those in the live casting community) or you are competing online with an unseen and unlimited number of competitors (this applies to those in the online audition community).\u00a0 All these people might have mastered the voiceover secret<\/a>, just like you.\u00a0 They can read without stepping on their lines, they can sound conversational when it\u2019s called for, and they have a pleasing tone.\u00a0 Now what?\u00a0 Now you must set yourself apart from the pack, and that\u2019s where intrigue comes in.\u00a0 You need something that goes above and beyond the \u201cbasic\u201d read.\u00a0 Here are some voice over techniques for achieving \u201cinterest\u201d in your delivery.\u00a0 Keep in mind they\u2019re just the tip of the iceberg:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Your hook.\u00a0 This is usually your first line.\u00a0 In some cases it might be two lines.\u00a0 You will be able to determine if a second line connects so intrinsically to the first that it becomes a part of the hook.\u00a0 Example:\u00a0 \u201cYour life has more than one dimension.\u00a0 So should your beer.\u201d\u00a0 It makes absolute sense to include the 2nd<\/sup> sentence as it almost seems like there could have been an \u201cand\u201d in between the two, as opposed to a period.\u00a0 Your hook is critical.\u00a0 I cannot tell you how many times I had writers or producers in my office listening back to the casting and how often, after hearing only the first line, they would wave their hand and say \u201cnext.\u201d\u00a0 They don\u2019t have the time nor the interest to keep on listening to something that isn\u2019t reeling them in, as unfair as that sounds.\u00a0 You must hook them in.\u00a0 Understand the sentence, and the point of it.\u00a0 Underline the\u00a0 words that are most crucial to the sentence and play them up.\u00a0 Now isolate this sentence from the script and try it a few times in a row.\u00a0 Experiment with where you put your emphasis on these words.\u00a0 Experiment with where your inflections are placed.\u00a0 Experiment with places you might add a pause for drama.\u00a0 Experiment and play.<\/div>\n
2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 During the whole script, but especially your hook, is it appropriate to say it in a more hushed voice \u2013 as if this is secret information for certain ears only?\u00a0 Then do so.\u00a0 Scoot up a bit closer to the mic and become more intimate with your listener.\u00a0 You must judge the \u201cmood\u201d of the script properly to do this.\u00a0 Or perhaps there\u2019s a hidden joking tone in there?\u00a0 Try speaking with a bit of that \u201cside of your mouth\u201d sound.\u00a0 Easiest way to \u201cwry.\u201d\u00a0 Judge the style, and recall how you or others you know convey that style in real life, and play with it.<\/div>\n
3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Act as if you have just heard this information and you were so excited about it that you had to immediately share it with people because it was so compelling.\u00a0 If you are interested, then we will be too.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
