Voiceover performances.\u00a0 That\u2019s the problem right there.\u00a0 The performance part.\u00a0 I recorded someone\u2019s demo a few years back and noticed a very specific pattern.\u00a0 The actor would give these huge over-the-top performances and you could hear it throughout the spot.\u00a0 It shouted, \u201cI\u2019m a voice over, hear me roar!\u201d\u00a0 And roar it did.\u00a0 He eventually got tired, because I kept making him read it over and over again as I wasn\u2019t satisfied.\u00a0 His tired read was not a performance.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t have the energy for that.\u00a0 All he was capable of doing at that point was talking, like a normal human being who\u2019s not \u201ctrying SO hard.\u201d\u00a0 Bingo!<\/div>\n

When you\u2019re getting ready to record your audition, or go in to the booth for your live one, let go of caring so much.\u00a0 Step out of your own way.\u00a0 Get off the stage.\u00a0 Chances are, if you read like you just don\u2019t care (well, a little bit) it\u2019s going to sound way less slick and salesman-like.\u00a0 When we speak to our friends and family, there\u2019s a comfort level.\u00a0 We have nothing to prove to the people that already love and accept us, and listen to us without doubt.\u00a0 Speak to your audience assuming that, and you will \u201ctrick\u201d them into feeling it.\u00a0 Some of the most powerful leaders in our country are successful not because of their great ideas or principles, but because of their oratory skills.\u00a0 They know how to mesmerize, how to sound at once authoritative and FAMILIAR.\u00a0 They speak with confidence, without trying so hard, as if they don\u2019t care so much of your impression of them \u2013 because they\u2019re sure of themselves.\u00a0 Those are the people we follow\u2026believe in\u2026..and some of the best actors emulate this.\u00a0 Listen to Robb Pruitt\u2019s voiceover testimonial\/demo<\/a> for evidence.<\/div>\n

Practice it.\u00a0 The \u201cthrow-away\u201d read.\u00a0 Read as many scripts as you can as if you DON\u2019T CARE.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry if it sounds extreme.\u00a0 You will know how to adjust it to level ground when it\u2019s for read.\u00a0 You\u2019re smart.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
